The workshop will emphasise the importance of interviewing while making films and videos. An emphasis will be placed on sharing good examples of interviews. We will be teaching tips and tricks on how to conduct good interviews as well as share films that have interviews that relate to the themes and topics emphasised in this programme.

Ultimate goal: to research, conduct, film, and edit interviews of each other together

Duration: 2 sections of 50 minutes each with a 15-minute break

Come listen to surreal fairy tales from the Asian sub-continent and Scottish stories of mid-winter.

Activities:Create your own masks and drawings and learn a few songs to sing over the Christmas holidays!


Dates: These events will take place on Saturday 14th December and Sunday 22nd December at 1.00-3.00pm.

The workshop will emphasise the importance of storytelling while making films and videos. An emphasis will be placed on sharing good examples of films that have been shot on smartphones or low budget as well as films that reflect the themes of this overall programme.

Overall aim: teach the participants tips and tricks on how to film and tell your story visually

In all workshops, core practical tips on filming with smartphones (as well as other recording devices) will be discussed such as framing, stabilisation, etc. This workshop’s ultimate goal will be for all participants to be able to walk out with a video they have filmed and edited perhaps over a track of music all within their smartphone. These mostly will be focused on action filming and “b-roll” versus interviews or to-camera presentations.

Boots & Beards and Colourful Heritage invite you to join us for a themed hill walk titled - "In the Footsteps of Force K6".

Force K6 is a regiment of the British Indian Army that was stationed in the Highlands of Scotland during WW2.

Join the themed walk around Glenmore Lodge, Aviemore, to enjoy some fresh air and to learn about this fascinating history. Lunch and transport will be provided.

Programme:

9am - Meetup outside Soulriders 4 Forth Street, G41 2SS (outside Strawberry Garden).

9.30am - Bus Departure

12 noon - Arrival at Kingussie Cemetery

12.30pm - Leave Kingussie Cemetery for Glenmore Lodge

2pm - Presentation by Hamish Johnston, local Force K6 expert historian

Evening talk with military historians Jahan Mahmood, Ghee Bowman and Dr. Zafar Iqbal

Colourful Heritage is organising a series of events to promote awareness of the role of the British Indian Army over World War I&II intentionally around Remembrance Sunday.

The evening will provide details on the role of the British Indian Army and use this to address contemporary issues relating to identity, sense of belonging, etc. that have intensified by the rise in Islamophobia, far-right narrative, anti-migrant discourse, etc.

Experts will share views and discuss with audience ways to positively navigate such contemporary social challenges.

From 5:30 to 6PM: Come along to visit Bud, Poppy Scotland's newest resource, a traveling interactive mobile museum! Learn more about the history of the poppy and remembrance.

What is Bud?

Bud is a vehicle for exploration and learning, a truck that transforms into a mobile community space, comprising a mini poppy factory, micro-museum and with interactive learning opportunities.

Bud  is an interactive experience that encourages visitors to create their personal remembrance journey through exploring the exhibits.  It is helping Poppy Scotland keep remembrance relevant all year round.

Bud is free-to-access and accessible-to-all.

Pay tribute to Force K6 British Indian Army soldiers buried in Kingussie - "A Corner of Pakistan in Scotland"

MULTI-FAITH REMEMBRANCE SERVICE FOR BRITISH INDIAN ARMY REGIMENT FORCE K6 BURIED AT KINGUSSIE CEMETERY, SCOTLAND

In 2018 Colourful Heritage held the inaugural formal joint multi-faith Remembrance Service together with the British Armed Forces convening diverse communities from across Scotland and the UK to pay tribute. On 31st October 2019, Colourful Heritage and the British Armed Forces will once again hold a formal service.

Background

During the WW2 an urgent call was made to the Indian empire (then joint Indian & Pakistan subcontinents) for animal troop companies to come out to France to help. Force K6 – Mule Transport Corps initially arrived in Marseilles in December 1939. The bulk of Force K6 was evacuated out of Dunkirk in France to Britain during World War 2, initially staying in Brecon Beacon in Wales before finally being moved to Scotland.

Scotland hosts the largest concentration of WW2 Muslim soldiers’ graves from Force K6 in the UK (jointly with Brecon Beacon site in Wales). There are 13 graves spread out in 4 cemeteries with Kingussie cemetery in Inverness housing the largest proportion containing 9 of these graves. Very often these graves were of young soldiers who died whilst training in the cold mountainous regions of Scotland. These soldiers buried in Scotland are primarily from the Punjab region and Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa (previously known as NWFP) from present day Pakistan.

Directions to Kingussie cemetery: Kingussie Cemetery lies to the east of the village, approximately one mile from the railway station. From the A9 exit for Kingussie, take the road to Kincraig (the B9152). The cemetery is on this road, with parking possible outside the entrance or on the opposite side of the road

 

For participants joining from Glasgow, a coach will leave from Glasgow as follows:

9:00am - Assemble at: Bellahouston Business Centre, 423 Paisley Road West, Glasgow, G51 1PZ for registration

9:15am - Board coach [luggage can be kept on the coach]

9.30am*sharp - Coach departs for Kingussie cemetery

12:30pm - Arrive at Kingussie Cemetery. [For those traveling in their own transport please ensure you arrive no later than 12.30pm. ]

1:00pm - Formal Remembrance service, wreath laying and 2-minute silence

1:30pm - Remembrance ceremony finishes [move to Duke of Gordon Hotel]

DINNER TO REMEMBER THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE BRITISH INDIAN ARMY

Scotland hosts the largest grave of World War II British Indian Army soldiers, yet few people are aware of this fact.

80 years after the start of World War II, Colourful Heritage, supported by Glasgow Museums and the Covenant Trust Fund, is hosting a dinner to raise awareness of the contribution made by the British Indian Army, consisting of modern day Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.

Programme highlights:

- Mobile exhibition

- 3-course meal

- Presentations by expert military historians and others including Hamish Johnston, Jahan Mahmood, Imam Asim, Mrs Rajinder Kaur and General (retired) Kevin Abraham. A young person from the My Kahanni team, will present on how the sacrifices of the British Indian Army has changed their thinking on their sense of belonging in Britain.

Colourful Heritage launches "My Kahanni" Project!

My Kahanni ("My Story") is a youth programme led by the youth for the youth and aims to spark a global social media conversation.

The project explores identity and belonging using heritage to tackle contemporary issues and engage young people with film and video as a format of self expression.

It is also an initiative to inspire young people to discover and share their South Asian heritage.

Young people will learn basic filmmaking and media presentation skills throughout workshops and a film festival during Summer 2020 will conclude the training.

Special Guests: Raisah Ahmed, writer and director & Atta Yaqub, youth worker and actor.

Raisah Ahmed
Raisah is a Scottish Asian Muslim Writer/Director based in Glasgow, Scotland. She studied Literature at the University of Strathclyde and went on to get her start in film through a First Light apprenticeship called 'Second Light'. Her short 'Meet Me By The Water' was commissioned by the Scottish Film Talent Network (SFTN) in 2015 as part of New Talent Shorts, it premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2016. The feature script for 'Meet Me By The Water' was shortlisted for the Sundance Screenwriters Lab 2015.

Atta Yaqub
Atta is a Scottish model and actor of Pakistani/Punjabi descent. He is most notable for playing the lead role in the 2004 film Ae Fond Kiss. In 2011, he entered international cinema with the German film Fernes Land (Junction Point) and Sabiha Sumar's Rafina. In 2012, he joined the cast of the BBC Three drama Lip Service.

We know the colourful and spiritual India - a land of rivers, festivals, gods, dances and lush green fields... but what about the rest?

Come listen to stories told by storyteller Gauri Raje.

BADLANDS: Untold stories from central India

Duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes of stories, a 15 minute break

Gauri Raje went on a journey to her ancestors' region, and found badlands; both in her father's and mother's lineage. Lands of warriors, dacoits and outcasts, parched ravines and black volcanic mountain ranges, of writers, bards and storytellers. Set in these arid landscapes and following the tradition of each story representing a particular season, her stories will come from outlying sections of society in Western and Central India where there is thirst, but also courage, wit, humour and music!

Languages: This piece is mainly in English but also uses Gujarati, Marathi and Urdu to give a resonance to the region within which the stories are set.

Refreshments: Savour seasonal South Asian fruit juices and home-made snacks.

Dates: These events will take place on Sunday 13th October and Wednesday 16th October at 1-2.45pm.
