Mrs Naima Ashrif

Mrs Naima Ashrif shares the inspiring stories of her father in law, Dr Ibrahim Ashrif MBE and grandfather in law, Mr Atta Mohammed Ashrif.

Dr. Ibrahim Ashrif completed his PhD in Agriculture at Edinburgh University in 1953 and had phenomenal academic mindsight, which gave him remarkable opportunities, such as working in the Foreign service in Gambia earning him an MBE in 1963. He also worked for the United Nations in South Korea.

Mr. Atta Ashrif made a brave decision to migrate to Glasgow from India. He founded Scotland’s first Muslim organisation, Jamiat Ul Muslimin (Muslim mission) in 1933. Starting off with nothing, he showed perseverance and exceptional business acumen, managing to set up the highly success Tanda & Ashrif warehouse and helped his fellow countrymen to establish themselves by giving credit. He was also related to Mr. Fateh Sharif who was given the honour to cut the first turf for Glasgow Central Mosque.
