Kingussie Services

Colourful Heritage are proud to have hosted the first Islamic remembrance service at Kingussie in 2018, and have continued to do so throughout the years.

We have also come to know that a total of 14 soldiers (13 Muslim & 1 Hindu) died whilst in Scotland. The Muslim soldiers are buried at Kingussie, Proncynain (Dornoch), Grange and Aberdeens Allenvale cemeteries with Sweeper Mangli cremated at Aberdeen crematorium (Kaimhill Road).

Kingussie Service 2018

In 2018 Colourful Heritage hosted the first Islamic remembrance service at Kingussie jointly led by the Armed Forces Imam Asim and Padre Duncan (coordinated by the late Lt Col Adrian Williams of the 51st Infantry Brigade) for the nine Muslim Force K6 Indian Contingent soldiers from WW2 buried there. This was well attended by a multifaith group of visitors from the Muslim, Sikh and Hindu communities from Glasgow, pupils from Kingussie High School and many local Kingussie residents including Mrs. Isobel Harling and her family. She tended to these graves for over 70 years and in 2019 was awarded a British Empire Medal for her selfless care and quiet humble service.

Other Memorial Services

Colourful Heritage were delighted to learn that in 2005 at the 60th Anniversary of VE Day, local residents from Kingussie had previously arranged and attended a multifaith Remembrance Service for the nine Force K6 Muslim soldiers buried at Kingussie Cemetery (see pictures below). Mrs Isobel Harling BEM (in pale blue) who has tended to the graves was present and Colonel Girdhari Singh who was a leading light in the Indian Army’s ASC Association also attended. RAF cadets formed a guards honour and there was a parade, ceremony and a reception at the Duke of Gordon Hotel.
Col Girdhari also visited the graves in the early 2000’s when he gave a talk to the local Primary School. He also made a generous personal donation to the Legion Scotland branch in Kingussie before his passing in 2012.
