The workshop will emphasise the importance of storytelling while making films and videos. An emphasis will be placed on sharing good examples of films that have been shot on smartphones or low budget as well as films that reflect the themes of this overall programme.

Overall aim: teach the participants tips and tricks on how to film and tell your story visually

In all workshops, core practical tips on filming with smartphones (as well as other recording devices) will be discussed such as framing, stabilisation, etc. This workshop’s ultimate goal will be for all participants to be able to walk out with a video they have filmed and edited perhaps over a track of music all within their smartphone. These mostly will be focused on action filming and “b-roll” versus interviews or to-camera presentations.

-Storyboard exercise – drawing out ideas on paper before filming

The workshop will emphasise the importance of interviewing while making films and videos. An emphasis will be placed on sharing good examples of interviews. We will be teaching tips and tricks on how to conduct good interviews as well as share films that have interviews that relate to the themes and topics emphasised in this programme.

Ultimate goal: to research, conduct, film, and edit interviews of each other together

-Research exercise – coming up and posing questions for an interview

The workshop will emphasise the importance of on-camera presentation and media training. We will use the expertise of actor, Atta Yaqub, to help participants understand the importance of good on-camera presentation, whether it is acting or presenting a news story, etc.

Atta will give us his tips on being an actor and presenter for BBC, etc, and like the other workshops before this one,  we will share good examples of well done on-camera presentation as well as examples that reflect the themes of this project.

Ultimate goal: to take away a filmed video of them being on camera and presenting a particular subject or news story

-Filming each other presenting a story from their research

-In-phone editing

The workshop will emphasise the importance of non-linear editing programmes and editing skills. Examples of good editing practice and films will be used as inspiration.

Topics and Activities in this workshop include:

-Participants will bring footage from home or can use provided raw video material to work with. This footage will reflect the themes of this project.

-This is also an opportunity for participants of multiple workshops to take their previous footage filmed and edit it into a more professional video project.
