Maharajah Duleep Singh takes up residence at the Grandtully estate in Perthshire.

Maharajah Duleep Singh, the young ruler of the Kingdom of Lahore, takes up residence at the Grandtully estate in Perthshire after he was deposed by the British.

Colourful Heritage volunteer Rupa Mooker teamed up with BBC Landward to explore the fascinating story of Maharajah Duleep Singh – the last ruler of the Sikh Empire from Punjab from Lahore (part of modern day Pakistan), who came to stay in Castle Menzies, Aberfeldy in 1855. He was the youngest son of Maharaja Ranjit Singh aka ‘The Lion of Punjab’. She explores how he ended up in rural Perthshire from colonial India under the guardianship of Scotsman Sir John Logan Spencer and draws comparisons with his multicultural upbringing and lavish lifestyle in India compared with UK and his twin Scottish & Sikh identity.

She also visits the nearby Kenmore Kirk graveyard to pay her respects to the Maharajahs first born son, the heir to the Sikh Empire who is buried there after he passed away on 5th Aug 1865 when he was just a day old. Watch the full clip here!
