In 2024 the Namak Mandi restaurant located on Bridge Street (which opened in 2017) moved to a larger premises within the Gorbals area. It now occupies a building with a long civic history, formerly known as Gorbals Library. The library was part of the Gorbals’ early 20th-century investment in public education and community infrastructure, serving generations of local residents before eventually closing as services were consolidated elsewhere. After a period of vacancy and uncertainty about the building’s future, it was redeveloped and repurposed, preserving elements of its historic character while adapting the space for a new role within the community.
Today, Namak Mandi reflects the changing cultural landscape of the area, standing as a large South Asian restaurant and events venue. Owned and operated by members of the South Asian community, it has become notable for its scale, including multiple banqueting halls designed for weddings, celebrations, and large gatherings. It is often described as one of the largest South Asian dining venues of its kind in Scotland, symbolizing both entrepreneurial growth and the broader contribution of South Asian communities to the country’s social and cultural fabric.
