Herstory – Farkhanda Chaudhry MBE

Starting her career in the youth work sector, Farkhanda has dedicated her entire career to the principles of community development and social equality. Over the years she has worked on projects spanning interfaith work, women’s development and civil justice, touching the lives of hundreds of people and tackling some of the most pervasive issues in Scottish society.

Farkhanda has taken up many public positions in her life, including Commissioner for Scotland with the Women’s National Commission. In 1994 she was appointed as a Justice of the Peace in Scotland—becoming the first ever South Asian, Muslim woman to do so—and served on the bench for over 20 years.

A tireless champion of equality and community, Pakistan-born and Glasgow-based, Farkhanda is among one of the first South Asian women in Scotland to have been awarded an MBE in 2004. Tune in via YouTube on Tuesday 8th September at 1pm to hear her story
